Summer/Outdoor Weddings--What to Watch For

The Beach, the Mountains, even the Desert for a night time wedding--- summer is the time to consider the outdoor wedding. Here are some tips to make sure it all goes smoothly.

1. You can never tell what the weather is going to do--so either rent a tent or make sure your location has both indoor and outdoor facilities.

2. If you choose a county, state, national park or a historic monument, make sure you check to see if you need a permit... if you can serve alcohol and if there are any other rules you must abide by. Make sure you know which amenities you can use and where they are--especially restrooms and  electricity.

3. Insects love to come to the party too, so expect to deal with them. You may wish to spray before the ceremony, or use some form of non-toxic repellent.

4. Embellish on what scenic views nature has given your chosen site. Look for ways to dress up the focal point of the wedding ceremony. An arch with flowers can be moved indoors at a moments notice and or add to the natural settings for photo opportunities. Candles are always handy to add some elegance to the ceremony, too. Try to plan so that the sun will not be in your guests eyes during the ceremony.

5. Let your guest know they will be outdoors so they can dress accordingly, and don't forget out-of-town guests may need climate information.

6. Parking is always an issue, so be sure to sort that out well in advance. Remember that elderly guest may have problems with steep or long walks.

7. The bride, and bridesmaids will also have to dress according to weather and setting. A long train on the bridal gown will end up dirty and possibly damaged unless steps are take to provide aisle runners. Spiked heels will sink, and overly dressed bridesmaids will look very uncomfortable--so choose their dresses carefully.

8. When it comes to food, be sure your caterer knows how to keep food that will display and last well under warm conditions and make sure to supply plenty of non-alcoholic beverages.

9. A nice feature, if it can be done, is to let guests walk to the ceremony spot, enjoying the scenery. Make sure you provide for elderly and handicapped guests.
