Who Will Perform the Marriage?
By Sally Manglicmot

What to expect.
If you are having a religious wedding, contact your clergy early in your planning. This should be on your Top Ten things to do after becoming engaged. Your clergy will inform you of all the requirements that must be fulfilled before the wedding. Some of the requirements could include participating with peers in a couples’ workshop, attending a couples’ retreat, and/or attending a series of marriage seminars.

The clergy will also inform you of other requirements concerning church membership, baptismal papers, previous marriage requirements, and the marriage license. You may have to complete a relationship questionnaire to discuss topics such as children, in-laws, depression, loss of income, buying a home, trust, power, expectations and work. This may be an opportune time to discuss intimate issues or to ask for help resolving wedding planning conflicts.

You may have special requests for your wedding. Most clergy are acceptable to your needs. The more orthodox prefer to stay with tradition, but there’s no harm in asking. You may not be close to your clergy and are not sure what will be said during the ceremony. Ask if you could see the words planned for the ceremony. Some Officiates are more verbal than others and you want to know exactly what will be announced to you and your guests before the wedding day, not on the wedding day.
