About Trinidad, CA

Home to 360 residents, Trinidad is situated on Hwy. 101 just off of the Pacific Coast. Trinidad is also home to a historic lighthouse that was built by the US Government on 42 acres, in 1871. Today, it is automatically operated, but on special occasions the city opens it up for the public to tour. The highest wave in the west coast’s history struck the lighthouse in 1914, extinguishing it for four hours. Ever since it was relit, its 192 foot above sea level flame has been kept lit automatically.

The area was originally settled by the Tsurai Indians over 350 years ago, before being colonized by the Spanish in 1775. By 1849, it was resettled by white explorers primarily as a supply town for gold-seekers mining the Klamath, Salmon, and Trinity Rivers. The city was officially incorporated in 1870, and became the only local seaport to ship lumber from area sawmills.

Today, Trinidad is home to a successful fishing fleet, and attracts many tourists who enjoy its quaint, historic, and scenic village.
