About
Roswell, New Mexico
Roswell is located 200
miles southeast of Albuquerque, New Mexico, at 1089 feet above sea
level, and has a population of over 50,000 residents. With moderate
winter and summer high temperatures 41/83 degrees respectively, and low
rainfall and snowfall inches of 10.75/3.3 respectively, Roswell’s 4
million plus annual visitors can all this city has to offer, being of
few cities selected twice as the All American City[1978, 2002].
In the late 1800s
Roswell’s early history includes the Lincoln County War, raids on the
Chisum Ranch by the Apache Indians, and most notably the history of
Billy the Kid. In Roswell’s more recent history, their agriculture,
tourism, and the infamous mysterious crash that happened in 1947 just
north of the city, got the attention of the whole country. In regards to
the crash, the city is host to the Annual UFO Festival which is held
every July. The immediate tourism publicity created the need for many
restaurants and hotels-motels to facilitate the large tourist industry.
Home to five museums
and the oldest established orchestra in New Mexico [Roswell Symphony
Orchestra], Roswell has plenty of cultural activities. The city also
attracts the more cultural and nature minded enthusiasts with the
Bottomless State Park, the Robert H Goddard Planetarium, and the
Bitterlake Wildlife Refuge for bird aficionados.
