About Oatman - Arizona
Oatman, Arizona, located on historic Route 66, is just a short drive
across the Colorado River to Laughlin, Nevada. In it’s prime it had more
than 10,000 inhabitants, and along with its close neighbor - 2 miles away
- the Goldroad Mine produced the most gold in Arizona.
During
World War II, the US Government recruited all of the area’s miners to mine
other precious metals, and along with Interstate 40 passing the area by,
the mines all closed down, turning the town into a virtual ghost town for
years.
In
the late 70s and early 80s tourists started to come back to historic Route
66, and the town was revitalized. It now boasts historic gold mines and
many other tourist attractions in the area including daily gunfights,
along with wild burros roaming the main street searching for handouts and
posing for pictures. The
Gable/Lombard suite at the Oatman Hotel is named for the famous movie duo
who spent their honeymoon night there.
It has also given rise to colorful annual events such
as the Bed Races in January, the Egg Frying Contest on July 4th
which is held right on Main Street, the Christmas Bush Decorating Contest
and more.
