Overview
The Pony Express Territory is home of the "Loneliest Road in America", Highway 50, which is pretty much the route the Pony Express riders traveled right through the heart of Nevada. Sand Mountain and the Navy's Top Gun Flight School are located in Fallon, and birders flock to see the the 250,000 migrating birds that spend time in the wetlands in the Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge each spring and fall. The second largest city in the state, Austin, is home to three churches build in the late 1800s that are still standing, and several of the original buildings from the 19 century are still standing in Eureka, including the Eureka Courthouse and the Opera House. Ely is a copper mining town and you can ride the Ghost Train of Old Ely, pulled by a steam locomotive dating back to 1910. Murals and sculptures decorate this renaissance Nevadan town. The Lehman Caves and the Great Basin National Park provide beautiful and fascinating natural wonders and Fort Churchill State Historic Park gives a glimpse into the Civil War period.
