Organ Pipe Cactus National MonumentOrgan Pipe Cactus National Monument
Located in Southern Arizona in the heart of the Sonoran Desert

Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is located along the US/Mexican border west of Tucson and east of Yuma, Arizona, just south of I-8 from Gila Bend. Many visitors are surprised to discover that this section of the Sonora desert is not brown, but full of trees, shrubs, cactus – including the Organ Pipe Cactus, and spring wildflowers. There are a number of outdoor activities to experience in the park including miles of hiking trails, two campgrounds, biking opportunities, scenic driving, routes and even geo-caching with a number of earth-caches. The park hosts some special events during the year, and also has a variety of ranger programs including guided hikes, patio talks at the Kris Eggle Visitor Center, special lectures and van tours, and special evening programs.

Organ Pipe Cactus National MonumentOrgan Pipe Cactus National MonumentOrgan Pipe Cactus Monument preserves over 330,000 acres of green, living desert and is home to a number of animal species including the endangered Sonoran pronghorn, bats, mountain lions, mule deer and white-tailed deer, javelina, desert big horn sheep, and more. Situated along a primary migratory flyway, birding is a popular activities with species to view such as northern cardinals, cactus wrens, curve-billed thrashers, black-tailed gnatcatchers, Gila woodpeckers, canyon towhees, black-throated sparrows, Gambel’s quail, and phainopeplas.

Organ Pipe Cactus National MonumentThe Kris Eggle Visitor Center is open daily except on Federal Holidays between April 1 and December 31. The Visitor Center features a 15 minute slide show, "Where Edges Meet: A Sonoran Sanctuary," and if you have children, ask about their Junior Ranger program that has an activity booklet is filled with fun activities that teach about the Sonoran Desert plants and animals.

Organ Pipe Cactus National MonumentOrgan Pipe Cactus National Monument is open daily, including Federal Holdiays. Entrance fees are per vehicle and are good for 7 days. This being a desert wilderness area, it is recommended that you bring water and sunscreen. There is no food or lodging in the park but 5 miles to the south or north there are small restaurants, grocery stores, and gas available. The town of Ajo is nearby and features restaurants and lodging facilities. Winter temperatures are pleasant being mid 50s to 60s during the days, and chilly in the evening ranging from 30 to 40 degrees. Summers are hot and exceed 100 degrees often, so it is advised you start your day early. Because of the US/Mexican borders proximity, some areas and roads are frequently closed for security reasons and all backcountry areas are closed to overnight use.
