Native American Indian Destinations

The first American Indian Day was celebrated in May 1916 in New York. In 1990, President George H.W. Bush signed a joint congressional resolution designating November 1990 as “National American Indian Heritage Month.” Similar proclamations have been issued every year since 1994. According to the Census Bureau, as of July 1st, 2005, the estimated population of Native American Indians and Alaska Natives make up approx. 4.5 million of the total US population.

In the Southwest:

* The population of Native American Indians in California is the highest total of any state in the nation, with over 696,600 people.
* California was followed by Oklahoma (401,100) and Arizona (334,700). About 36,500 Native American Indians and Alaska Natives were added to Arizona’s population between April 1, 2000, and July 1, 2005. That is the largest numeric increase of any state in the nation.
* Over 154,000 Native American Indians and Alaska Natives live in Los Angeles County, California. Los Angeles led all of the nation’s counties in the number of people of this racial category, though Maricopa County, Arizona, added about 18,000 people to this group between April 1, 2000, and July 1, 2005 - leading the nation’s counties in this category.
* As of 2003, over 40% of the population in the metropolitan area of Farmington, New Mexico, is Native American Indian and Alaska Native. Farmington led all metro areas, with Flagstaff, Arizona coming in at 31%.
* There are over 20,380 American Indian and Alaska Native-owned firms in the Los Angeles/Long Beach/Riverside areas in California. This combined statistical area, makes that area the number one in the metro category. Among counties, Los Angeles had the highest number of firms - approx.13,061.
* There are over 38,125 Native American Indian and Alaska Native-owned firms in California, which leads the nation’s states.
* The three cities with the largest number of Native American Indian-and Alaska Native-owned firms, include with New York, NY with 7,134; Los Angeles, CA ,with 5,767; and Gallup, NM, with 2,642; respectively.
