National Native American Indian Heritage Month
Native American Indian Destinations

By 300 B.C. the Southwest region (not including Central, Western and Northern California) had developed three major cultures that farmed, hunted and gathered food. These cultures included the Anasazi who were the cliff dwellers in northern Arizona and New Mexico, Utah and Colorado; the Hohokam who utilized irrigation systems in central Arizona; and the Mogollon who farmed and hunted in western New Mexico and eastern Arizona. The cultures that developed in California were very isolated by natural barriers like mountain ranges and vast deserts, so had little or no contact with the rest of the Southwestern tribes.
The Native Americans in the Southwest USA of today are descendents of these cultures and include the Navajo, the Apache, the Acoma, the Comanche, the Hopi, the Tewa, the Zuni, the Hohokams, the Mohave, the Pima, the Papago, the Pueblo, the Shoshone, the Ute, the Wiyots, the Hualapai, the Yuma, the Chumash, the Hupa, the Yurok, the Shasta, the Tolowa, the Modoc, the Atsugewi, the Miwok, the Maidu, the Yokut, the Costanoan, the Esselen , the Pomo, the Mono, the Piaute, the Gabrielino, Dieguieno, and the Cahuilla.
All of the cultures produced beautiful pieces of art, crafts and jewelry. Below is a list of some stores where you can purchase these items.
