Welcome to Laughlin,
Nevada, located just 5 hours from L.A. and 6 hours from San Diego, by
car, on the Colorado River.
First called South
Pointe, Laughlin was established in the 1940s with only a bar and a
motel, catering mainly to gold and silver miners and the construction
workers who built the Davis Dam.
Once completed, everything all but vanished until 1964 when Don
Laughlin, a casino owner from Las Vegas, bought the land and built the
first casino called the Riverside Resort. The area was then called South
Point until a US Postal inspector renamed it Laughlin.
The area boomed with eight more casinos being built, bringing the total
to nine today, with over 10,000 rooms and 14,000 plus workers attracting
5 million plus visitors a year. There are a multitude of gaming, first
class shows, and events per year.
With the city located
where it is, and only about 500 feet above sea level, the average
temperature of 87 degrees welcomes many outside activities including
swimming, boating, hiking, fishing, and golf. Laughlin is now home to
over 8,000 residents but still remains primarily a visitor’s haven.
