ARMISTICE
DAY OR
REMEMBRANCE DAY
Veteran's Day
On November 11, 1918 in a railway carriage just outside Compiegne, France, World I ended with the signing of an armistice agreement.
A Remembrance Day of some sort is generally held in most parts of the world, in honor of the bravery and loyalty of those who fought to bring peace and to protect their countries and loved ones. It is traditional hat three minutes of silence be observed in memory of the victims of war and the declaration of peace.
During World War I, fierce fighting took place in Flanders, Belgium. Despite the land laid barren and black from war, the spring would bring a carpet of blood-red poppies. A Canadian artillery officer and doctor, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, authored the famous In Flanders' Field poem which soon became the soldiers' anthem.
Each November, Canada remembers their dead by wearing poppies made and distributed by veterans. They are purchased as a donation to help the needy ex-service people and their families. During the ceremonies, it is customary for a lone bugler to play "Last Post", followed by two minutes of silence. The Reveille is played to signify the memory of the dead lives on and therefore, life triumphs over death.
