T he Smudging
Ceremony
California White Sage - For smudging with abalone shell and turkey
feather, by Barbara Pound, available online at www.CrossroadsTreasures.net

For thousands of years, many Native
American peoples have performed a ritual of cleansing and purification
through the use of sage. Every object has it’s own energy field (aura),
which can collect negative energy. This results in an imbalance. In a
healthy balanced state, our bodies work like a well-oiled machine, each
part doing a different job, but all parts working together for the good of
the whole body. When imbalance occurs, disease sets in and the body begins
to break down. In the smudging ritual, the sage is lighted until it smokes
and a feather is used to fan the smoke along your body. The left side of
our body carries negative ions and the right side carries positive. The
fanning helps to equalize the ions as does the sage smoke. Meditation and
prayer during the ritual, cleanse your mental state.
