SALADS: Derived from the Latin word 'herba salta'- meaning salted herbs, salads were enjoyed by the ancient Romans and Greeks. They began their popularity in the US during the 1920s, became a hit in the 1960s - when natural and healthy living became a trend and Salad Bars were introduced; and by the 1970s they became a fixture on most menus. We've come a long way from a dish of greenery dressed in oil and vinegar, and a cherry tomato on top.

#1 - ENSALADA DE MEXICO - The Yuma Landing Restaurant & Lounge: With the Mexican border town of Algodondes only minutes away, this salad is a tasty choice at the Yuma Landing. Enjoy a tortilla shell piled high with their delicious homemade Chili Con Carne, shredded lettuce, tomato, cilantro, black olives, and cheddar cheese. #2 - THE WONDER GARDEN SALAD - The Wonder Garden Cafe: This sensational salad offers a bed of fresh greens laden with crunchy cucumber, carrots, cabbage, beets, juicy tomato wedges, garbanzo beans, marinated sunflower seeds, sprouts and croutons. You can add avocado, hummus, or smoked tofu. One of the highlights of their salads, is their homemade signature dressings, including Garlic Plum, Tangy Lemon Garlic, Creamy Balsamic, Herbed Vinaigrette, Ranch, Blue Cheese, Feta Cheese, and Tzatziki. #3 - SHRIMP SALAD - Margarita's Restaurant: This 'Shrimply Delicious' salad was added to the American menu in the 19070s, and is a delightful choice at Margarita's Restaurant. Dig into a plate heaped with succulent shrimp served on a crisp bed of greens, cool cucumber and tomato; and garnished with the zest of lemon slices and Balsamic Vinaigrette. SANDWICHES: The sandwich was originally introduced to America in the 1840s by Elizabeth Leslie, in her 'Directions of Cookery', where she had a recipe for ham sandwiches as a main meal. The popularity of the sandwich rose in the 1900s when bakeries began selling pre-sliced bread, making it an easy-to-make and portable lunch item for workers and scholars alike.

#4 - CLUB SANDWICH - Wynola Pizza Express: It's been said that 'The Club' was a favorite of former King Edward VII of England, and his wife Wallis Simpson. The Club at Wynola Pizza Express is an appetizing creation of quality meats and cheeses like Blackforest ham, oven-roasted turkey breast, Genoa salami and provolone cheese; accented with crispy lettuce and ripe Roma tomato and served on a freshly baked focaccia roll which is actually baked in their pizza oven. #5 - THE LUNCH SPECIAL - Apple Alley: Apple Alley's Lunch Special is a hearty and delicious cure to midday hunger; featuring half a sandwich, your choice of a small soup or garden salad, and a yummy slice of their famous apple pie. Sandwich choices include ham, turkey, or roast beef with Swiss or cheddar cheese; or their vegetarian sandwich (see photo) which is scrumptious with Swiss and Cheddar cheeses, avocado, tomato, sprouts and mayo. Sandwiches are served on fresh wheat, sourdough, white, or rye bread. For only $7 - you can't beat this great lunchtime treat. #6 - ROAST TURKEY SANDWICH - Moe's Cafe: 'One bite and you're hooked'. Their Roast Turkey sandwich is a savory meal piled high with thick and juicy slices of oven-roasted turkey (which is roasted in their ovens), fresh shredded lettuce and slices of plump tomato. It also comes with your choice of French fries, or garden salad.

#7 - THE WORKS - Linda's Frozen Yogurt: This mouth-watering sandwich is a masterpiece made up of premium deli meats including roast turkey, glazed ham, roast beef, salami, and crisp bacon; delicious provolone cheese; slabs of ripe avocado; garnishes of lettuce and tomato - all stacked high between two slices of sourdough.
