Be a ‘Shoe-in’ This Fashion Season!
by Leanne Sabo
Move over ho-hum flats and pumps and make room for shoes with personality – personified! In case you haven’t picked up a fashion magazine lately…SHOES RULE!

Long relegated to primarily only black, brown, taupe, and navy, this season shoes are making a bold fashion statement in bright, vibrant colors and fun, innovative, and adventurous styling. Yellow, red, and blue are huge fashion favorites as are flower prints, color blocking, and patent leather.

Gladiator sandals (hail Caesar!) are attracting Cleopatras everywhere! Last summer you saw them as flats, this Spring the Gladiator look as been paired with Wedge soles.  And speaking of Wedge soles, they are – both tall and small – back for Spring and Summer wear in all styles. Round-toe pumps and open-toe Oxfords are making an encore performance. Wood heels and architectural styled heels – many with encased baubles – are not only shoes, they’re conversation pieces!

Because we know that current fashion trends – like this one – can be ‘here today, gone tomorrow’ and shoes can make or break an ensemble, here are some important pointers to take into account – that WILL stand the test of time – when purchasing your next pair of shoes.

  • What’s the occasion? Be sure to match your shoes to the occasion and the feel of your outfit. Flats and loafers are excellent choices for a casual affair, while strappy, high-heeled sandals are perfect for a night on the town.

  • If you can only afford one good pair of shoes for the new season, choose your color wisely. A pair of closed-toe pumps in black or a lighter neutral like taupe or metallic, are always a good choice because they blend with everything.

  • Ankle straps tend to make legs look heavier and shorter. This style works best on someone with long legs and thinner ankles.

  • When it comes to heels, a 1-1/2 to 2” heel is always flattering. The higher the heel the more it appears to lengthen the leg making you look taller and slimmer. Keep your heel height under 3” heel for traditional business, however. Of course if you’re in the fashion business, anything goes!

  • The weight of your garment and your shoes should strike a happy balance. For example, a lighter looking shoe (fabric, open styling) works best with lightweight fabrics, while leather shoes balance heavier weight fabrics. Likewise, keep your shoes in proportion with your feet. Small feet and thin legs look best in dainty styles and thinner heels, while large feet and heavier legs can carry off weightier styles and heels.

  • Sandals and mules are generally not appropriate for a business environment. A closed-toe, sling back pump, however, is always in good taste.

  • Remember, think before you buy. Ask yourself…“How much wear will I get from this pair of shoes?” “Are they comfortable when I walk in them?”

Finally, unless you’re purchasing a pair of shoes as part of a current fashion trend, buy the best pair of shoes you can afford. While they may cost more upfront – if you’ve chosen wisely – you’ll be a ‘step’ ahead in the long run.
