Red Hat SocietyLadies Hang On To Your Hats!

Hats, a “must-have” fashion accessory in the 40s, 50s and 60s are back in vogue. Not veil and feather styles with names like pillbox, sailor, or romantic floral, but, none-the-less, here. In the 70s, 80s, and 90s women loosened up and casual dressing did not include hats.  However, pseudo hats were a presence as visors, baseball caps with ponytails sticking out the back and perhaps an occasional “dress-up” hat for a wedding or funeral.

But, the old is new again, thanks in part to the Red Hat Society (RHS).  The formation of the group was inspired by the poem, “Warning” by Jenny Joseph, that begins “When I am an old woman…”  RHS are groups of women over 50 who wear purple outfits and red hats on excursions, to teas or luncheons.  Women who swear they don’t look good in hats are making a beeline to hat shops and scooping up red hats. And, they are LOOKING GOOD!  The trend is spreading beyond the RHS and non-members are joining the hat movement

Every day in my shop, Oceana Fashions, I get requests for hats, and not just in red. Some women want to add pizzazz to a special outfit; others want to cut the risk of sun damage to their skin or camouflage bad hair days. Today’s hats are creatively made of paper, sea grass, ribbon, straw, felt, synthetics.  Many are crushable and pack able and easily taken along on trips, inside the suitcase not in a separate carry-on.  They’re available in every price range, and are massed produced or custom crafted.

Trying on hats is fun.  Tilted forward, pushed back, worn over one ear, brim folded up or down, individualize the same hat for different women A brimmed hat placed square on the top of the head on the forehead with hair pulled back behind the ears is a popular and attractive look. Hats draw attention to the wearer and spark men’s interest. A woman wearing a hat sends a silent message, “Here I am!”

As the ad says, “we’ve come a long way” from formal hats of the 40s and 50, but Spring 2003 is the time to revive the fashion “must have” of the past.  Buy a hat!
