Kayak,
The New Frontier
The Animated Manual of Intermediate and
Advanced Whitewater Technique
by William Nealy
Book review by Nancy J. Reid
William Nealy, revered as the Poet
Laureate of the white-water community died in 2001. Kudos to the talented
and dedicated group that assembled, updated and published Nealy's last
400+ illustrations and notes, into Kayak - the New Fontier.
Staying true to Nealys style and humor, this book shows updated equipment
and techniques through marvelous cartoons and cryptic notes. Even if you
are not a kayaker, the book is fun to read and you learn a lot. In fact,
it makes you feel like giving kayaking a shot. It covers everything from
reading the water, to white water etiquette, to how to rescue yourself. It
comes complete with an animated flip-through on the right bottom corner
that will show you a the Low Brace Combat Roll. I particularly enjoyed the
section on reading the "probe" or lead kayaker--watching his/her body
language in order to save yourself from the same fate.
It's a brilliant book and whether beginner, intermediate or advanced, it
is definitely a good source of information and advice.
