Artist Liesel ParisArtist Spotlight: Liesel Paris
 by Lisa Smith

I recently visited Liesel Paris at her studio/gallery in Borrego Springs, CA.

This Austrian born artist is highly talented and her fine art beautifully brings to light the heart and soul of ancient cultures.

Liesel works in a unique process called ‘Reverse Glass Painting’, an art form dating back to the 13th century, also known as ‘Hinterglas’, meaning ‘behind the glass’. She discovered this process soon after graduating from the Art Academy of Vienna. Through her extensive art travels in Central and Eastern Europe, Liesel became intrigued by icons, their fascinating history and iconography. Combining the transcription of ancient images, and the revival of an old, almost forgotten technique, became her artistic priority.

Unique to her work is the complicated process of making the glass, (her canvas), look old. This is accomplished by the use of specific chemicals with extensive gold leafing.

A participant in many exhibitions, Liesel has won many distinguished awards, including her recent win of 1st prize for mixed media, at the Las Vegas Museum of Art, for her piece ‘Archangels Michael and Gabriel’.

For thousands of years, Marco Polo and merchant-traders of the world used caravans on the silk route to buy and sell their goods. Liesel follows their spirit in designing her ‘Ethnic Treasures in Jewelry’. Her one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces are exquisite having a southwestern flair and European charm.

Artist Liesel Paris in Borrego Springs, CaliforniaShe presents two distinct groups of work. The first is traditional jewelry from different world cultures where the pieces are presented exactly as found -without any alterations or restringing. The second, is jewelry designed and personally strung by Liesel. Using colorful semi-precious stones, beads and pendants, and exquisite hand blown Murano Venetian glass from Venice, items from Asia, Africa and faraway places; Liesel strives for a collage of color that maintains an ethnic look.

Jewelry made by Liesel ParisLiesel’s Art Studio & Gallery is located in ‘The Center’, at 590 Palm Canyon Dr., Ste. 207, Borrego Springs, CA 92008.View her art online at www.lieselsart.com - her website really explains the ‘reverse glass process’), and you can see her jewelry on www.ethnictreasures-jewelry.com.
