About Ajo, AZ
A former copper mining district, Ajo is a small community located in the Western Pima County in Southern Arizona, near 12 million acres of public and tribal land, and only a 2 hour drive from Phoenix and Tucson. For a glimpse into Ajo’s past, visit the downtown historic Plaza featuring Spanish Colonial architecture, and the historic railway station. Home to only 4,000 residents and beautiful clear skies, Ajo is a perfect place to start a family or a small business. Visitors can explore the plants and wildlife in the area’s Sonoran Desert while visiting the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, or the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge & Visitor Center. From Phoenix, AZ: Ajo is
a 2 hour drive southwest of Phoenix, heading south on I-10, then east on I- 8, then south on AZ Hwy. 86.
From Tucson, AZ: Ajo a 2 hour drive west of Tucson, heading west on I-10, then west on I-8, then south on AZ Hwy. 86. Alternatively, a scenic route from Tucson is to take AZ Hwy. 86 (Ajo Way) west of Hwy. 19. 
From Yuma, AZ: Ajo is about a 3 hour drive from Yuma, heading west on I-8, then south on AZ Hwy. 86.
